Climate Change Needs Coaching ~ An...

We are pleased to share an article entitled Climate Change Needs Coaching ~ An attraction model for effective climate conversations with clients  written by Don Maruska.

Climate change is not just an environmental issue; it’s a chronic problem that demands sustained, self-motivated personal change. This ongoing challenge necessitates a level of motivation and commitment that coaching can uniquely provide.

While fear can motivate short-term actions, we need an attraction model to address chronic challenges like climate change. Individuals and organizations must stay motivated over extended periods to embrace their hopes for a net-zero carbon future, shift behaviors and reduce greenhouse emissions. Coaching plays a vital role here by helping people internalize their commitment to climate action, keeping them engaged and proactive over the long haul.

Some coaches worry about “imposing a climate agenda” on their clients. On the contrary, climate coaching offers multiple benefits that merit your clients’ attention.

ATTRACTING CUSTOMERS WHO VALUE SUSTAINABILITY

Today’s consumers are more environmentally conscious than ever. A Nielsen report found that 81 percent of global respondents feel strongly that companies should help improve the environment. Businesses that demonstrate a commitment to a healthy climate attract customers who prefer to support organizations aligned with their values.

Boosting Employee Attraction & Engagement

Employees, especially those from younger generations, want to work for companies that support their values. A 2024 Deloitte survey revealed that 72 percent of Gen Zs and 71 percent of Millennials say environmental credentials and policies are important when considering a potential employer. By engaging in climate action, businesses not only attract top talent, but also increase employee engagement and retention.

Making a Difference for a Healthy Climate

Teams accustomed to working together effectively can leverage their collaborative skills to contribute to a net-zero carbon future. By aligning organizational efforts with climate goals, businesses make a tangible difference while enhancing team cohesion and purpose.

COACHES CAN FACILITATE IMPACTFUL CLIMATE CONVERSATIONS

Coaches have a unique opportunity to engage clients in meaningful yet straight-forward conversations about climate action. These discussions don’t need to be complex or time-consuming.

In a brief exchange of 20 to 30 minutes, you can help a client find their climate sweet spot where passion meets purpose, leading to lasting change for a healthier planet.  See sidebar at left for a sample of a live, unrehearsed conversation.

THE POWER OF SIMPLE CONVERSATIONS

When guiding workshops on climate action, model this conversation with a volunteer like Seth. Other participants will observe and learn how it works. While they watch, encourage them to think of creative ideas to match the interests and needs they hear.

Observers enjoy contributing possibilities for the person in the conversation, which not only expands the array of options but also motivates them about the potential of this type of dialogue for themselves. As one observer commented: “I love when you said, ‘do what you love and match it with your actions.’ It’s simple, but it’s so true.”

TURNING THE WHEEL OF CHANGE FOR CLIMATE HEALTH

Inviting someone to have a Climate Action Conversation begins to turn the 3A wheel: Awareness, Action and Advocacy. Wherever a client chooses to begin, they help turn the wheel for a healthy climate future.

For example, software programmers create apps to boost awareness of the impacts of climate change. People like Seth in the sample conversation prompt neighbors to tap into nature-based solutions. Others may engage local, state and federal officials in advocating for broader climate solutions. A step in any of the 3As prompts interest and support for the others, leading to a critical mass of public engagement.

As a coach, you can be a valuable catalyst, starting a chain reaction as each person becomes involved. Together, we can help people find and enjoy their climate sweet spots. As we do, we’ll reach the tipping point needed to support a healthy planet.
